Turn a Whiskey Barrel into a Beautiful Garden Planter

Turn a Whiskey Barrel into a Beautiful Garden Planter — Island Barrel Company

One of the most popular uses for our half whiskey barrels is as garden planters, and for good reason. The rich, weathered oak adds an instant rustic charm to any garden, patio, or deck, especially here on Vancouver Island where lush greenery is everywhere.

What You'll Need

  • 1 x Island Barrel Company Half Barrel ($70)
  • Drill with large bit for drainage holes
  • Landscape fabric (optional)
  • Quality potting mix
  • Your choice of plants

Step 1: Prepare the Barrel

Drill 4–6 drainage holes in the bottom of your half barrel, about 1 inch in diameter. Good drainage is critical to prevent root rot. If desired, line the inside with landscape fabric to help retain moisture while still allowing drainage.

Step 2: Treat the Wood (Optional)

The natural char inside the barrel acts as a mild preservative. If you want to extend the life of the exterior, apply a food-safe wood sealer or linseed oil to the outside of the barrel. Avoid the interior if you plan to grow edibles.

Step 3: Fill and Plant

Fill the barrel with a quality potting mix, leaving about 3 inches from the top. Half barrels work beautifully for:

  • Herbs (basil, rosemary, thyme, mint)
  • Strawberries
  • Ornamental grasses
  • Lavender
  • Mixed annuals for colour

Tips for Vancouver Island Gardens

Our climate on Vancouver Island is mild and often wet, meaning your barrel planter will thrive outdoors most of the year. Elevate it slightly on bricks or feet to prevent the bottom from sitting in standing water. In winter, you can leave hardy plants in place or refresh with seasonal plantings.
